In the South Palatinate, between the Palatinate Forest and the Rhine meadows, lies the Bienwald. On this flat cycling route, you can perfectly experience the forest and its unique landscape.
The route runs on marked cycle paths and little-used roads around the Bienwald. From village to village, you cycle past meadows, fields, and pastures and repeatedly immerse yourself in the forest. In doing so, you can get to know the various facets of this area and the forest: the "South Palatinate Viehstrich" with its fruit-rich fields, pastures, and orchards between Kandel and Schweighofen, the Rhine meadows near Neuburg and Hagenbach, the meadow fields near Scheibenhardt and Berg, and the grassland-shaped lowlands such as the Bruchbach-Otterbach lowland near Jockgrim or the Lauter valley lowland near the French border. Idyllic villages and towns like Kandel, Scheibenhardt, or Hagenbach invite you to stop either to strengthen yourself with Palatinate dishes, taste South Palatinate juice or wine, or simply enjoy a fresh ice cream. Even on this flat tour, culinary enjoyment is not neglected.
UFFBASSE! – Campaign for a considerate coexistence in nature
- Be considerate on the move – Always behave thoughtfully, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the way. This applies especially on farm roads, where winegrowers, farmers, and foresters also work on weekends.
- Picnic & rubbish – Remember a rubbish bag for on the way and take your waste back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks & picnics.
- Nature conservation – Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are out in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest to not disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

Author’s recommendation
If the distance is too long, I recommend the shorter routes "Bienwald-Rhine Meadows" (approx. 45 km) or "Bienwald-Streams Tour" (approx. 34 km).

Safety information
Cycling on farm roads – Our cycling routes often run on paths we share with others. Therefore, we ask for a considerate and friendly attitude at all times. Winegrowers, farmers, and foresters use the farm roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work – also on weekends. Due to work operations and/or weather conditions, the paths may be more heavily soiled at times. Special caution is also advised when passing through and around Palatinate towns. Road closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Hazard situations – In case of an emergency, quick help is needed. And even though mobile phones can send GPS signals, the classic rescue points often offer the fastest aid. These are located in places that are easily accessible by rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when you call for help. This way, rescuers will know where to find you.

Roadbook
Due to the good and easy access by train or car, the route can be comfortably started from Kandel. Since the route is well signposted in both directions, the route can also be started in any other town of your choice. In Kandel, we ride from the station into Gartenstraße towards the center until we reach the cycle path "Around the Bienwald." From now on, we always follow the tour logo (light green meadow area with a tree on the left and a church and houses on the right). Clockwise, we first come to Jockgrim, then ride through Wörth, Hagenbach, Neuburg, and Berg towards the south. In Neulauterbourg, where the border to France is in sight, we turn towards Scheibenhardt, ride via Bienwaldmühle to Schweighofen. From Schweighofen, we cycle along the "Viehstrich" via Steinfeld, Wörth-Schaidt, Freckenfeld, Minfeld back to Kandel.
If you want to start the route from Jockgrim station, please note that the route does not pass directly by the station but runs along the edge of town. We recommend following the signs from Jockgrim station to Hatzenbühl and cycling on Hatzenbühler Straße towards the town’s exit. At the town exit, you will then find the signposting of the cycle route "Around the Bienwald."
