Der Jakobsweg führt die Pilger auf wenig befahrenen Quartierstrassen und Stadtgassen durch die Städte und die grösseren Ortschaften, viele davon mit langer Pilgertradition, an schönen Kathedralen und Stadtkirchen und beachtenswerten kulturhistorischen Sehenswürdigkeiten vorbei. Ausserhalb dieser stark besiedelten und teils industrialisierten Orte ziehen die Pilger durch eine von der Land- und Obstwirtschaft geprägte Landschaft auf ruhigen Feld- und Waldwegen durch Felder und Wiesen, Wälder und bewaldete Bachtobel. Ihr Weg führt sie durch enge und weite Täler mit ruhenden und fliessenden Gewässern, entlang den Hängen der sanften Hügellandschaft bis hinauf auf Bergketten und Pässe, wo die körperliche Anstrengung mit einer wunderbaren Aussicht belohnt wird. Am Weg kommen sie an gepflegten Bauernhöfen und alten Gasthäusern, auch ehemaligen Pilgerherbergen, vorbei. Sie ziehen durch Weiler und Dörfer mit schmucken Häusern und Gärten und begegnen manch emsigen und freundlichen Anwohnern, mit denen sie, oft auch bei einem erfrischenden Getränk, ins Gespräch kommen.
