The "Via Francigena" is one of the 3 Christian pilgrimage routes of the Middle Ages, whose main axis leads from Canterbury in England to Rome. This documentation currently covers the section from Pontarlier to Rome.

From the Ostello Cisa, we can return to the main route of the Via Francigena, on the same path we arrived by the day before; yesterday's "VarianteCisa non-stop" stage then takes us to the Passo della Cisa. Alternatively, we can also hike to the pass on the main road, which has traffic but is the quickest way up. At Passo della Cisa, we move from the Province of Parma in the Emilia-Romagna region to the Province of Massa-Carrara in the Tuscany region with the capital Massa.
Here we also leave the main road and remain at these heights for a while, passing by Passo Del Righedo. Only at the Apennine peak "El Cuccero" does a descent of 600 meters begin, dropping from 1000m above sea level to 400m above sea level. In the last part of this descent, we pass the village of Groppoli.
We then climb again to 700m above sea level before finishing this Apennine stage at the stage town of Pontremoli at just above 200m above sea level. We have now completed the Apennine crossing. The location of the stage town Pontremoli, at the confluence of the Fiume Marga and the Torrente Verde, had strategic importance in the past due to the wide view over the broad valley; today Pontremoli is a popular holiday destination.

    Author’s recommendation

The stages in this documentation are suggestions that every pilgrim can adapt to their wishes. However, the technical data always assumes that these stages are completed in one day each.

    Safety information

This stage from Berceto to Pontremoli is the classic route for descending from the Apennines and is still a scenic route today, especially in sunny weather. However, in foggy and wet weather, the route is critical, which is why an alternative route, which we call variant and new, was developed around 2014-16.
