During this stage, we cross the «Grosse Moos», the «vegetable garden of Switzerland». We will notice that the area is completely flat, that the fields are intersected by drainage canals, and that the soil has a sandy character and contains practically no stones.
There are reasons for this: before the Jura water correction, this area was repeatedly flooded after heavy rains, which naturally had a good influence on soil fertilization, but made the area unsuitable for the construction of settlements or industrial buildings. Since the mentioned correction, this has changed somewhat, but vegetable cultivation has remained faithful.
So we walk over fields and some forest sections until we reach the Broye Canal, which connects Lake Murten with Lake Neuchâtel. The first thing we do is cross the canal on an elegant pedestrian and biker bridge, then follow the Broye to Lake Murten, where we reach the charming, historic stage town of Murten. Murten is sure to please.
