Marsberg Monastery Route III
Pilgerwege Deutschland
The Marsberg monastery routes are intended to connect the two Marsberg monasteries in Obermarsberg and Bredelar with the surrounding monasteries. There is no special marking, but the route follows already marked hiking trails.
As soon as the route turns north behind Flechtdorf, it roughly follows the Frankfurter Weg, an important medieval road that led from Frankfurt via Korbach, Marsberg and Paderborn to Bremen.
In Zollhaus there used to be a customs station of the Principality of Waldeck, which controlled border traffic to and from Electoral Cologne Westphalia. The actual border – today the state border between Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia – runs further north, about one km south of Borntosten, a district of Marsberg.
From there we leave the course of the Frankfurter Weg and reach the Calvary chapel of Obermarsberg via Leitmar, Emesse and Schwarzen Berg, the end point of the "Seven Footfalls." This old Way of the Cross takes us along the road to the former monastery of Obermarsberg.
