For more than 125 years, there has been an organized mountain rescue in the Gesäuse. Over time, this institution has also become a modern operational organization, but the task has remained the same.
At the beginning of the 1960s, some parts of the formerly very large operational area were handed over to the surrounding mountain rescue local stations. What remains is still an impressive area of over 300 km², which includes the Haller Mauern, the Buchstein Group, the Hochtor Group, the Reichenstein Group, the Johnsbachtal, and the Admont Basin. Here are seven managed mountain huts, several alpine pastures, as well as countless gorges, ravines, and streams.
The work in the service of mountain rescue has its downsides, but the good times outweigh them. To keep it that way, everyone is required to continuously improve their knowledge and skills. Only through constant joint exercises and personal mountaineering training can the high level of our voluntary operational organization be maintained to perform well in emergencies.
Because we are not usually called upon in good weather – mostly only when the helicopter cannot fly, that is in wind, fog, rain, or at night.
