Brenta Group, by Csaba Szépfalusi

The Alpenverein Edelweiss, officially named Alpenverein Edelweiss – branch of the Austrian Alpine Club, is a Viennese branch of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) and, with its approximately 102,500 members (as of 2022), is the largest branch club of the Alpine Club in terms of membership.

History

In 1946, the Alpenverein Edelweiss was founded as a section of the Austrian Alpine Club. At its founding in 1946, the section did not own any huts. The first hut was only put into operation in 1954, the Tappenkarsee Hut in the Radstädter Tauern. The second hut, the Alois-Günther-Haus on the Stuhleck, 1782 m, in the Fischbach Alps in Styria, which was taken over from the Stuhlecker section, was put into operation in 1964. In 2012, the house was awarded the ÖAV environmental quality seal. Since 1960, the Edelweiss Hut has belonged to the club. In 1967, the Bohemia Hut at Obertauern was acquired from the Prague section of the German Alpine Club, and in 1969 a main building including a connecting corridor to the Bohemia Hut was built. The house, which is now operated as a ski hotel and located in the middle of the Tauernrunde between the Edelweiss and Plattenkar cable cars, was named after the then chairman Rudolf Wismeyer. The Wismeyer House was awarded the ÖAV environmental quality seal in 2011 and the environmental label for tourism businesses by the Ministry of the Environment in 2012. In 1986, the Albert Biwak in the Schmalzscharte on the Tauern hiking trail in Salzburg was added.

When the Wiener Lehrer section was dissolved in 2009 and incorporated into the Alpenverein Edelweiss, its hut ownership passed to the Alpenverein Edelweiss. The Adolf-Noßberger Hut (National Park Hohe Tauern, Carinthia, 2488 m), the Hochschober Hut (National Park Hohe Tauern, East Tyrol, 2322 m), both awarded the ÖAV environmental quality seal, and the Hinteralmhaus in the Mürzsteger Alps in Styria, which has been operated as a self-catering hut since 2013, are now owned by the Alpenverein Edelweiss, which thus also owns family-friendly high mountain huts.

Other facilities:

  • Edelweiss Center - Bouldering & Fitness, 1010 Vienna, Walfischgasse 12
  • Vienna City Rock, rope climbing course hall in a secondary school, 1010 Vienna, Hegelgasse 12.
