A Dorogi-medencében kitermelt szén dunai szállításának megkönnyítésére épült meg 1927-ben a szénosztályozót a folyammal összekötő, majdnem hat kilométer hosszú kötélpálya, amelyhez a folyóparthoz közel, a mederben egy szénrakodó is épült.
A kissé romosan is impozáns ipari emlék funkciója a csillékben érkező szén továbbítása volt az alatta a vízen várakozó uszályokra. A rakodón dolgozó munkások feladata volt a szénporral teli csillék leforgatása a kötélpályáról, majd tartalmuknak a bunkeres surrantóra, azaz egy csúszdára ürítése, melyen a szénpor egyenesen a hajók gyomrába érkezett.
Esztergomtól a Dunán főként a csepeli erőműbe, illetve más budapesti ipari létesítményekbe szállították a szénport. A munkások a rakodót csónakon tudták megközelíteni, majd egy vaslétrán másztak fel a magasban lévő fogadóra. A szénrakodó 1963-ig üzemelt, ezt követően a kötélpályát elbontották, a vízben álló épületet pedig magára hagyták.
1994-ben egy alapítvány tulajdonába került az épület, képzőművészek látták meg a nagy lehetőséget egy különleges, víz feletti műterem létrehozására, azonban az állagmegóvási munkákat sem sikerült elvégezni a mai napig az építményen. Szerencsére majd’ száz évvel ezelőtt masszív konstrukciót alkottak az akkori mérnökök, így egy darabig még biztosan dacol az idővel az esztergomi szénrakodó.

- Esztergom, Horgásztanya megállóhelytől a párkányi komphoz vezető úton kell elindulni a Duna felé, majd a kompkikötő bejáratát elérve balra kell térni egy földútra, ami a folyópartra vezet (összesen kb. 700 méter séta).
Parking
- A párkányi kompkikötő bejáratánál tudsz parkolni, innen a földúton sétálva érhető el a szénrakodó.
