Pomáz – Esztergom horse riding route
The Esztergom-Pomáz horse riding route connects the EuroHorse horse riding route, which starts from Bavaria and runs along the Danube, with Budapest through the Pilis Mountains.
On the Slovak side of the Danube, it is excellent to ride on flat terrain along the dike and dirt roads by the dike in pleasant surroundings. Some villages have restaurants and inns by the riverside that can accommodate riders as well. The ferry operating between Esztergom and Párkány is also suitable for animal transport, so the starting point of the horse riding route is the Hungarian side ferry dock, while the other end is the Magyar Vár Tábor in Pomáz, which can accommodate up to 20 horses and riders.
If you ride from the Budapest direction (Pomáz) toward Esztergom, the traveler can satisfy hunger and thirst at charming hospitality spots in the nicely located villages of the Pilis, and after a full day’s ride, rest in Esztergom before heading back or continuing the next day.
The Esztergom–Pomáz horse riding trail is over 30 km long, with approximately 1000 m of elevation gain and loss on forest roads, recommended only for experienced riders. It is advisable to start the journey in the morning. The Pilis is a limestone and dolomite mountain range, so parts of the forest roads are covered with gravel, where horses can safely walk. The wonderful scenery, the atmospheric forest, and interesting stops provide a lifetime experience for those who complete the “great Pilis horse trail.”
Author’s recommendation
- Several sections of the horse riding trail are also open to cyclists and pedestrians, which can pose dangers to all participants. Be mindful of hikers and expect cyclists as well!
- Before and after Kesztölc, there are short sections along the edge of an asphalt road. If the horse is skittish, it is advisable to dismount and walk these sections.

Detailed description of the route
Crossing the Danube, we follow the red horse trail marking for about 7 km on flat terrain. Traveling along the paths of the Szentkirály dűlő pastures, we reach Esztergom-Kertváros, then continue along the gentle slopes of the protected, grassy areas of Tábor Hill to Kesztölc. Here, passing by the cellar row, we can continue along a road to Klastrompuszta. Under the beautiful, forested hillsides and the “illuminating” rocks on them, the remains of the first monastery of the only Hungarian-founded monastic order, the Paulines, can be seen.
From Klastrompuszta, we can continue at the edge of the forests on the Pilis Ride route marked with a black horse head by Pilis Parkerdő, beneath the tall, steep block of Pilis Peak ahead of us. At the Pilisszántó quarry is the Chapel of Blessed Özséb, and the ride there is comfortable and nearly flat.
From here, again following the red horse trail, we reach the southern base of Som Hill, from where we continue on forest roads along the black horse trail (Pilis Ride) past the bases of Hosszú Hill and Ziribár Hill up to the Csobánka saddle.
After crossing main road 1111, again on the red horse trail, we travel through the Majdán saddle between Csúcs Hill and Majdán Hill to the Majdán plateau near Pomáz, from where the Magyar Vár Tábor, the route’s endpoint, is visible to the naked eye.
