If the weather is nice on the weekend, don't hesitate! It fits perfectly into two days to paddle from Esztergom to Budapest. The water tourism along the Danube Bend is picturesque. The water leads you among the Esztergom basilica, the confluences of the Garam and Ipoly, castles, mansions, and charming small towns. Spend the night at the tip of Szentendre Island, the most popular camping place in the Danube Bend!

    Author’s recommendation

During paddling, expect lively motorboat and rowing boat traffic on the Danube all day long. Do not travel in the middle but closer to one of the banks, and watch out for obstacles in the water! Use a watercraft in which your full touring and camping gear fits comfortably! Along the way, you can stop to rest and eat at any settlement since it is easy to find a restaurant or buffet anywhere during the season. The tour can be completed with 4-6 hours of paddling per day.

    Safety information

During paddling, the relevant regulations must be observed. Every person on the paddlecraft must have a life vest of an appropriate size on board. Wearing it is mandatory for those who cannot swim and for people under 14 years of age! Motorboats must be passed at a lateral distance of at least 50 meters. Pay special attention to navigation signals: these may indicate dangerous spots and the edge of the shipping channel. Carefully avoid the spurs built in the Danube (spur: a cross-dam built with stone riprap perpendicular to the shore), the pontoons tied to the shore, and industrial facilities, loading docks!

    Roadbook

We start from the gravel shore above the Mária-Valéria Bridge in Esztergom. Preferably, cross the shipping route above the bridge, as the boat traffic takes place between the bridge pillars near Esztergom under the bridge. This way, we won't miss the first sight, the confluence of the Garam. If the water level is at least medium, we can paddle in the small side branch flowing under the Burda Hills.

Stay close to the left bank, as the spur before Helemba Island can be dangerous! If the water level is low, the huge pebble beach of the Szob shoal is a wonderful bathing spot in the middle of the Danube. Only below Szob is it worth crossing to the warmer right-bank bays if you are well-timed. Instead of swimming, you can choose the Shipping History Museum on the left bank in Zebegény. If you have strength, don't stop before Nagymaros! There, the designated beach awaits with buffets, restaurants, the main square's confectionery, and a grocery store. Watch the ferry at the dock! If it starts moving, it has priority. You can stay until the afternoon; from here, the Kisoroszi camping site is less than half an hour paddling away. Paddle closer to the left bank to get there!

Overnighting is quieter on the Vác side as the traffic of road 11 is not heard there. The next day, choose the Szentendre Branch! It is narrower and perhaps more atmospheric. Stay close to the right bank but avoid the pontoons lined up along the shore! With medium water levels, you can enrich your journey with narrow branches behind the islands. You can paddle behind the island at the beginning of Dunabogdány as well. Although it is barely 200 meters long, the slender side branch next to the main road has a captivating atmosphere. After leaving it behind, pull further inside and pass the yacht port well! Ahead of you is a narrowing, behind which is a huge lagoon with the yacht port's long pontoon in the middle. Instead, go about 100 m further down and only paddle out to the beach there! You'll find buffets, bakeries, and a restaurant here. Paddle further on the right bank! Two kilometers after the stone loading area, you can enter a meandering branch system, and under the last island, a side branch opens up on the other side. Don't miss that either! You are almost guaranteed to see herons or other water birds here!

If you stay near the left bank, the shore becomes suitable for bathing again before the Tildy Zoltán Bridge. Opposite, between the bridge and the ship station, a shaded forest edges the nicely maintained meadow, the site of the Bridge Fairs. If you continue, after a four-kilometer forested section, you reach Leányfalu. Here, on the right bank, above the Pócsmegyer ferry pontoon, you'll find a good mooring spot with buffets, benches, and restaurants nearby. After departure, you first pass the Határ Csárda. There is a ferry; watch out for it! Then you reach Pap Island on the right bank, where you can only paddle into the side branch if the water level is at least medium. Ship station, downtown Szentendre. After that, at the bottom of the lagoon behind the narrowing, there is a beach.

If you have time, walk up to the promenade in the town; it's worth it! Continuing your journey, to the right is Dragon Island, followed by Lupa Island. On the island, Uncle Sanyi's buffet could be a good stop under the plane tree row, or directly on the right bank at the ferry dock, the Ebihal Buffet. From here, one hour of paddling will bring you to the Római-part.
