Die Wimbachgrieshütte liegt fast am Endes des Wimbachtales auf 1.327 m Höhe. Am Ende des Wimbachgrieses bilden Watzmann im Osten, Hochkalter im Westen sowie die Abbrüche des Großen Hundstodes im Süden eine beeindruckende Kulisse.
Wanderung zur Grieshütte
Die Wimbachgrieshütte ist in einer zwar langen, aber relativ leichten Wanderung auf den AV-Wegen 641 und 642 von der Wimbachbrücke im Bergsteigerdorf Ramsau aus erreichbar. Immer auf dem Schuttsrom des Wimbachgrieses führt der Wanderweg durch die Wimbachklamm oder an der Schlucht vorbei sanft ansteigend zwischen den steilen Felswänden von Watzmann und Hochkalter bis zur Hütte auf 1.327 Metern Höhe.
Wimbachgrieshütte als StützpunktDer nahegelegene Pass Tirschübel mit seinen Übergängen zum Kärlingerhaus, zum Riemannhaus oder zum Ingolstädter-Haus am Hundstod macht die Wimbachgrieshütte auch als Stützpunkt einer Mehr-Tages Tour interessant. Auch nach der legendären Watzmann-Überschreitung ist die Wimbachgrieshütte ein idealer letzter Stützpunkt, wenn es schon zu spät für den Fußmarsch zurück nach Ramsau ist.
Geschichte der Wimbachgrieshütte
1919 pachteten die NaturFreunde München vom Freistaat Bayern die "Griesalm“ bzw. "Windachütte", welche seit ca. 1546 an der Stelle des heutigen Hauses stand, und bauten die Alm zu einer einfachen Bergsteigerunterkunft für 20 Personen aus. 1922 bis 1924 wird ein neues und größeres Haus erbaut. Nach ständigen Verbesserungen und Umbauten erhielt die Wimbachgrieshütte in einem Umbau 1954/55 seine heutige Form. Die letzten großen Umbaumaßnahmen erfolgten 2001, als ein Ökologischer, umweltgerechter Ausbau der Energie- und Wasserversorgung, der Trinkwasseraufbereitung sowie der Abwasserentsorgung erfolgte.
