The low mountain range extends over the German federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia and forms the geologically most diverse low mountain range in Germany. From Seesen in the west to Lutherstadt Eisleben in the east, the Harz Mountains stretch over 110 km and reach 30 to 40 km in width. With a national park, four nature parks, a biosphere reserve, a geopark and numerous nature reserves, nature is preserved, some almost untouched natural landscapes can be found and a lot can be learned about the natural landscape at the information points and from rangers.
The Harz is also known for its reservoirs: the Upper Harz Ponds include the oldest reservoirs in Germany that are still in operation. The miners also created the famous Upper Harz Water Rack, the famous technical system of water management, some of which is still in use today.

Beech forests and, at higher altitudes, spruce forests, deep valleys with breathtaking gorges, rushing rivers and streams, gentle mountain meadows and ranges of hills offer a beautiful and varied natural landscape. A special area are the moors, habitat for numerous animal and plant species and a very special spot of earth, which can be walked through on footbridges.
The highest mountain of the Harz, the Brocken, reaches a height of 1141 m and is a very special mountain. The prominent mountain top juts out of the otherwise rather flat landscape and is therefore exposed to storms without protection. The summit plateau is often surrounded by fog, but if not, it offers a fantastic view. The Brocken has always been a legendary mountain, the natural phenomenon of the Brocken ghost and the legend of the witches' dance on the Blocksberg contribute to this. Located directly on the former inner-German border, the Brocken was a restricted area for 28 years. Today it can be reached again and delights hikers, mountain bikers or excursionists who climb it with the Brockenbahn.
