The high plateau of the Eifel is dotted with some elevations like Schneifel or Hohes Venn. The highest peak is the Hohe Acht and at the same time the only elevation that exceeds 700 m. The long ridges usually do not have a big difference in altitude to their surroundings, but there are many peaks with beautiful panoramic views as well as observation towers.
The Eifel is especially characterized by the elements. The geological development is reflected in nature and can be easily discovered in the UNESCO Global Geopark. Extinct volcanic cones, valleys crossed by rivers, bizarre rock formations, marshy dry maars and stratified mountain ranges – every landscape form tells a story.

The regions of the Eifel
The landscape of the Eifel is mostly divided into North and South Eifel. However, the natural landscape can be divided into further areas. On the border of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate are the Ahr Mountains, also called Ahreifel. The densely wooded surroundings are popular because of numerous excursion destinations such as medieval castles.
The Schneifel is a mountain range in the west of the low mountain range on the border to Belgium. If the term has nothing to do with snow, but in the old language use it denotes an aisle, the term Snow-Eifel originated from it, which however covers a larger area.
The Volcanic Eifel is the most famous landscape of the German low mountain range. Typical Eifel maars, volcanic buildings, lava flows and volcanic craters are evidence of the origin of nature. The area is still volcanically active, recognizable by gas discharges, mineral springs and cold water geysers.

The Hohes Venn Nature Park is a cross-border area between Germany and Belgium and is also known as the North Eifel. In the middle of the nature park is also the protected Eifel National Park, which provides an undisturbed retreat area for wild cats and black storks, for example.
The Moselle Eifel is the southeastern strip of the low mountain range. Half of the docked plateau is forested, but the elevations are lower than in the volcanic Eifel. The picturesque Moselle valley separates the Moselle Eifel from the higher Hunsrück region and makes the area one of the most popular German vacation areas.
In the Southern Eifel there is a cross-border nature park between Germany and Luxembourg. The landscape here is characterized by extensive forests, which are interrupted by fields and meadows. The Southern Eifel is especially popular with cyclists and hikers.
Activities in the Eifel
The low mountain range is particularly popular with hikers and cyclists. The unspoiled nature offers fascinating views. In the shade of the forests or under the sun over the meadows you can reach cultural and historical highlights like castles, monasteries and picturesque towns. The Eifelsteig ensures a long and varied hiking experience. The river valleys attract cyclists, who in the Eifel can also ride on disused railroad lines. Sporty and ambitious cyclists should try the mountain bike routes or the challenging Eifel-Ardennes cycle path.
If you prefer a quieter pace and are looking for a special experience, the Star Park is the right place for you. In the middle of the Eifel National Park, an area has been designated which offers clear skies thanks to the sparse population and low light pollution in the surrounding area.
