The multifaceted trail combines the villages of Vuokatti and Sotkamo and at the same time opens up two different cross-country skiing areas. You will ski across two frozen lakes.
The versatile route takes the skier from Vuokatti Sports Institute directly to the center of Sotkamo, to the famous Hiukka beach and outdoor recreation area.
The trail runs from the ice of Särkinen towards Leivolankylä in a hilly pine forest. After some 2 km's of skiing a speedy but gentle downhill leads you to the ice of lake Sapsojärvi, where you ski for 2 km on the frozen lake until you reach the shores of Hiukka. The view is breathtaking: lakes as far as the eye can see, Vuokatti hills in our back and the steep sand cliffs of Hiukka in front of us. From Hiukka beach you can reach all cross-country ski runs of Sotkamo. You are also a few hundred meters walk from Sotkamo Market Square.
The trail is two-way and has both classic and free technique ski track.

The destination at Hiukka is in the immediate vicinity of Sotkamo center and it's services.
From Hiukka you can visit Hirvenniemi some 500 meters skiing along the shoreline. In Hirvenniemi there is a "Havukka-aho" -statue dedicated to the literature of Veikko Huovinen, a famous Finnish author from Sotkamo.

START from Vuokatti Sports Institute: Ski towards the Vaara trails at "ylämaasto", the high lands. Just before the overpass of the railway track, the trail turns to the left descending towards the ice of lake Särkinen. Follow signs "Leivolankylä & Sotkamo".

During the winter season, skiers are transported by a free Vuokatti ski bus.
There are buses running between Kajaani and Sotkamo along the road past Vuokatti Sports Institute.
