This is one of the highest and most important lighthouses of the Greek seas, and the largest built in Greece by the British. It is located at a focal point, at the sea passage of Kythera-Peloponnese, connecting the central and eastern Mediterranean. In this passage there are also the lighthouses on Cape Matapa of Mani and Kavomalia. It was built in 1857, designed by the engineer Alexander Gordon, and has a circular tower that reaches 25 meters high. The mechanisms of the lighthouse, weighing 20 tons, arrived from England, while the rest of the building materials came from Kythera. About 50 workers worked in the project, some of whom lived in a cave nearby. Initially, it was transmitting one [flash] signal per minute [with a flare] in a range of of 24 nautical miles. The lighthouse was electrified in 1984 and automated in 1989. It transmits 3 [flare] signals per 30 seconds [with]in a range of 19 nautical miles.
