This is the central square of Chora in Kythera with the town hall and other services. There is always life during the morning hours on weekdays, as residents from all over the island come to run errands.
The square took its present look in the 1950s. The building that hosts the National Bank today, used to be “Pano Scholio” (the upper school) of Chora, which first operated in 1905. It was build following the same architecture for all schools built in Kythera at that time, such as the ones in Fratsia, Markesakia, Kontolianika and elsewhere, during the tenure of the Minister of Education Spyros Stais, who was from Kythera. Afterwards, the building also functioned as a hospital.
The “pasta mylou” made in the kafeneio (traditional coffeshop) of Kokkinos, next to the square, became on of the most famous local sweets of the island.
