The church of Agios Georgios belonged to the noble Kaloutsi family, one of the oldest (from the 15th century) and most influential families in Kythera.
Clustered together with the church of Chrysostomos, with a double-arched bell-cote, the church of Agios Georgios belonged to the noble Kaloutsi family, one of the oldest (from the 15th century) and most influential families in Kythera.
During the 18th century, it used to be a parish church with vicars from the same family and prominent parishioners. Notable vicars were: Nikolaos Kaloutsis, later bishop of Kythera Neofytos from 1776 to 1781, his brother Antonios, later vicar of Myrtidia Monastery for 50 years, and Neofytos Kaloutsis of Emmanuel, one of the most important spiritual figures of his time who received the honorary title of Ecclesiarch.
The tombstone of the latter, survived the time and shows a written text by the great scholar Theodoros Stathis-Birbilios, who praised freedom in his panegyric during the dominance of the French democrats in Kythera.
