Its twin bays are one of the iconic spots of Kythera. In Piso Gialos (back bay), is where the fishermen's boats are moored while the front bay has an esplanade with shops, cafes, taverns and bars by the sea. The name of this coastal settlement comes from the verb “kapsalizo” (scorch), due to the warm microclimate of the area. The name is very old, as it has been used at least since the 15th century, usually in relation to the castle, which has been often referred to as the Castle of Kapsali.
It has always been the seaport of Chora, and although its expansion had been planned twice during the Venetian rule, it was never implemented. Finally, on the initiative of the residents, the first port of Kythera was built in Kapsali in the 1960s, which allowed ships to dock without the use of small boats from the open seas.
