The landscapes of Kythera are stone-built, stone by stone carved by man. Collectively, the “Skalia” (terraces), as the Kytherians call them, comprise the largest geotechnical work in terms of scope and value.
By creating horizontal areas on slopes, people create useful space for cultivation, thereby retaining the scarce and precious soil while utilizing better the rainwater, since it is filtered and stored underground.
By harnessing the barren and arid environment, the local community managed to produce barley, wheat, grass pea (“lathiri”) and everything else necessary for their living.
Today, although most of the terraces are abandoned, they are an important semi-natural habitat for wild species of flora and fauna, while reducing erosion and enriching the aquifer.
