Criccieth Castle

Cricieth Castle occupies a commanding rocky headland overlooking Cardigan Bay and the mountains of Snowdonia. Originally established by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great in the early 13th century, the castle later became an important English stronghold after Edward I's conquest. The site offers dramatic coastal scenery and sweeping sea views. Visitors can explore the gatehouse remains, defensive walls, and traces of medieval occupation while learning about the castle's role during Welsh resistance and later conflicts. Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter. Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
