Castell Coch

Castell Coch, meaning "Red Castle," is a spectacular Gothic Revival fantasy castle located on wooded hillsides north of Cardiff. Although built on the remains of a medieval fortification, the current structure was designed in the 19th century by architect William Burges for the wealthy Marquess of Bute. The castle was intended as a romantic interpretation of the medieval past. Inside, visitors discover lavishly decorated rooms filled with murals, gilding, stained glass, and elaborate furnishings. The richly imaginative interiors contrast beautifully with the surrounding beech forests, making Castell Coch one of the most visually striking buildings in Wales. Cadw is the Welsh Government's historic environment service and manages more than 130 historic sites across Wales, spanning prehistoric tombs, Roman forts, medieval castles, abbeys, industrial heritage and historic houses. Around 27 of the largest sites charge admission, while the majority are free to enter. Admission status can occasionally change for special events or conservation work. Some free sites have no staff or facilities. Several major paid sites occasionally offer free entry days, especially around St David's Day. Cadw membership gives unlimited entry to all paid Cadw sites.
