The castle is the living proof of Cardiff’s eventful history. The different complexes of the building also show, how the architectural style has evolved.
The Romans were the first to use this location strategically and built a fort around 50 AD. The Normans re-used the sight after the Norman Conquest in 1066 and built several keeps, the one in the centre of the areal originates from this area. The Victorian Palace was added when Cardiff turned into the world’s greatest coal exporting port. The Butes where the last family to own Cardiff Castle, in 1974, it was handed over to the city as a gift.
