Baranya surduk is a typical Baranya phenomenon that is a combination of nature and human activity. Surduk is the name for the most often steep, deeply incised road in the mountains, formed by the widening of gullies. The lateral, vertical sides of the surduk can be several meters high, and are usually interspersed with tree roots, which prevent it from collapsing. The canopy of such trees often covers the surduk, so it looks like a tunnel. Over the years, the treetops have replaced the houses known as "gator", in which Baranya wine is stored at a cool 12 to 15 degrees Celsius, providing excellent conditions for traditional wine-making in Baranja.
