“Bënunì te Gherdëina! - Welcome to Val Gardena! "

Val Gardena is one of the few valleys where Ladin is still spoken today. The Rhaeto-Romanic language goes back to the colonization of the Alpine regions by the Romans and has been passed down orally from generation to generation. Ladin is now taught as a compulsory school subject and is also featured in magazines and television programs. A visit to the “Museum de Gherdëina” in the Cësa de Ladins, the house of the Ladins in Ortisei, is worthwhile. It not only shows the history of the valley, but is also a memorial exhibition for Luis Trenker, perhaps the most famous son of Val Gardena. Wood carving has played an important role in the local economy since the 17th century. In the three valley towns there are numerous workshops where you can look over the shoulders of the craftsmen. The world's largest hand-carved nativity scene can be found in the Iman Center in St. Christina.

The Val Gardena: between Sella Group, Langkofel and Geisler group

The Val Gardena stretches from the Sella massif westwards to the confluence with the Eisack valley near Waidbruck. If the Dolomite valley shows itself as a wild rock gorge at the mouth, it only expands at the “Ladin Gate” near Pontives into the actual valley basin. In the east rises the huge Sella massif, surrounded by the four Dolomite passes Gardena Pass, Passo Sella, Passo Pordoi and Passo Campolongo. The valley is bordered to the south by the horseshoe-shaped Langkofel group, which opens up to the Alpe di Siusi. In the north stretch the prominent peaks of the Geisler group, which drop over the extensive Rasciesa ridge to the west. Except for its secluded side arms, the Val Gardena has no side valleys, which is why its three places Ortisei, S. Cristina and Selva are densely populated. Ortisei at the entrance to the valley shows itself to be the center of economic and cultural life, while S. Cristina has retained its village character. Selva at the head of the valley has made a name for itself as a winter sports center.

Sellaronda and Superski: actively experience Val Gardena

Originally in demand as a summer vacation spot, Val Gardena is now widely known as a winter sports region. The highlight is the Sellaronda, where the entire Sella massif can be skied around in just one day. Val Gardena belongs to the Dolomiti Superski network, which opens up twelve ski areas and thus 1200 kilometers of slopes. The Vallunga near Selva or the Monte Pana high plateau near St. Christina offer an impressive backdrop for cross-country skiers. In summer the valley in the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites can not only be hiked, but it also has interesting via ferratas such as the Sass Rigais crossing or the Col Rodella path. Mountain bikers tackle the famous ski classics on the Sellaronda MTB Tour on wheels and find around 30 routes in the Val Gardena / Alpe di Siusi bike region.

A land of champions

A land of champions
The Saslong slope

An area like this is the perfect training ground for young athletes with big dreams! Val Gardena has indeed churned out a long list of champions who have distinguished themselves at the highest level in many winter disciplines. Just think of, among many others, the downhill skier Isolde Kostner and her cousin ice skater Carolina Kostner or the skier Peter Runggaldier, but also the young Alex Vinatzer, Nicole and Nadia Delago, also in alpine skiing, Jessica Malsiner in ski jumping and Samuel Costa in Nordic combined, all athletes who participated in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

So a land of champions ready to welcome both those who want to follow in their footsteps and those who simply want to be pampered by the warmth of this land suspended between sky and snow!

A summer of activities

In summer, well-developed and signposted trails invite you to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites on foot or on two wheels, and then enjoy a pleasant break in the valley's rustic huts and refuges. Val Gardena is also home to interesting via ferrata routes, such as the Sass Rigais traverse or the Col Rodella trail.

Mountain bikers can tackle the famous Sellaronda MTB Tour or choose from around 30 routes in the Val Gardena / Alpe di Siusi bike region.

What are you waiting for then? Discover all the recommended routes in this magnificent valley!
