Natural landscape in Hunsrück
The Hunsrück stretches over 100 km in length and 20 to 35 km in width and reaches its greatest height of 816 m on the Erbeskopf. The Hunsrück plateau, with altitudes between 400 and 500 m, and the Simmerner Mulde are considered the core of the mountain range. The plateau is cut through by valleys towards the Moselle and Rhine, the largest massif is found in the south with the Hoch- and Idarwald. In the north, the Hunsrück has a plateau character.
The landscape in Hunsrück is covered to a large extent by forests, but also agriculturally used areas, brook valleys with meadows and pastures as well as the rivers Simmerbach, Hahnenbach, Guldenbach, Baybach, Flaumbach, Dhron and Ruwer can be found here. Nature is protected in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and the two nature parks Saar-Hunsrück and Soonwald-Nahe. Between beech and spruce forests, hillside and spring moors, gray boulder heaps and colorful flower meadows, numerous animal and plant species can be found. Especially the birds are richly represented and Europe's largest number of wild cats live in the national park.
In addition, the longest hanging rope bridge in Germany, a free attraction for people who are free from giddiness and adventurers, stretches over the Mörsdorf brook valley. The Geierlay Bridge was built after the model of Nepalese hanging rope bridges and is 360 m long. It is located at an altitude of 100 m between the communities of Sosberg and Mörsdorf.
