Already in the Middle Ages, the landscape of the so-called Idar plateau was referred to in documents as "Between the Forests." You can expect beautiful viewpoints with views of the Erbeskopf, Wildenburg tower, and the forested ridges of the Hunsrück.

The start is at Allenbacher Weiher with a wading pool. Along the way is the historic mill, Allenbach Castle, and the Allenbach church with a "STUMM organ." The scenic "Eva-Loch Gorge" is crossed on winding, narrow paths.

The artist Gerd Edinger created the installation "Sun Time Between the Forests" at the forest edge above Wirschweiler as a trail sign and time object. It consists of a base stone for the night, a second large stone for the day, and numerous smaller stones for the hours. The 1 km-long Geopark Krahloch vividly informs about geology, rocks, mining, and natural space with its stone exhibits and display boards.

    Roadbook

On the way, hikers can look forward to numerous nature experiences: dense forests with winding paths as well as open meadows and farmland. There are viewpoints where sensory benches offer a well-deserved rest, with views of the Erbeskopf, the Wildenburg tower, and the forested ridges of the Hunsrück. In between, babbling brooks and a gorge with a steep ascent.

We begin the hike at Allenbacher Weiher and walk through the idyllic village along the German Gem Road past the historic grain mill, Allenbach Castle, and the church. We leave the houses behind and go above the Hohlbach past horse paddocks toward the forest. After crossing L162, we approach the "Eva-Loch Gorge." We cross the gorge on winding, narrow paths uphill and reach the open field at the top. A magnificent view and the inviting sensory bench reward the climb. Along the forest edge, the path leads to the sports field of Wirschweiler – another entry point for the Dream Loop. Now the path leads again on narrow paths through forest sections, past another sensory bench, until we meet the open field again. Here the view opens onto the impressive landscape of the region. Downhill it goes toward Geopark Krahloch. On the left, we see the community of Sensweiler before we cross the German Gem Road / L162. Partly the path follows the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig. A bat cave and another sensory bench also await us on this section.

Geopark Krahloch vividly informs about geology, rocks, mining, and natural space with its stone exhibits and display boards. We pass the slate mining and the den of fox and badger.

Then it goes to the right over open meadows into the forest. On narrow paths, the way now leads through dense undergrowth until we step out of the forest again. We cross the street toward Wirschweiler and hike on a section of the "Nature Trail Idarbach" toward Allenbach. The babbling of the Idarbach follows us to the first houses in Allenbach. In Allenbach, the Dream Loop leads us across the village toward the pond, where the hike concludes magnificently. Allenbacher Weiher invites hikers to linger, and by water treading in the wading pool, tired feet can recover from the impressive hike.

Our tips for an effortless hiking pleasure:

Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and shoes, it’s twice the fun. Functional clothing, trekking poles, and breathable backpacks are pleasant when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Robust jogging or casual shoes are suitable only for short distances on flat paths. For longer trails, we recommend sturdy hiking boots with grippy, non-slip soles. Also, think about sun protection and bring a drink. One liter of water is ideal.
