Selected alternatives for you
Alternating between narrow paths and wide trails, the dream loop leads through seemingly untouched forests as well as expansive meadows and fields. Embedded in a large valley floor between the Black Forest and the wooded headwaters of the Ruwer, the trail circles the municipality of Schillingen and offers wonderful views of the forests of the Hunsrück.

Via the barefoot path along the Flonterbach stream, you leave the leisure facility with the Schillinger Waldsee lake behind you and a few minutes later you are standing in the middle of the forest in front of the Fatima Chapel.

From the meadow path between Heddert and Schilllingen, you can see the elongated ridge of the Black Forest high forest behind the valley depression in which Schillingen lies. The border between the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland runs partly along the ridge.

Between pastureland and farmland, the route leads to the outskirts of Schillingen. The wooded ridge of the Osburger Hochwald, the source of the Ruwer, which rises at the Rösterkopf, is clearly visible.

The trail leads along forest and meadow paths to the Keller reservoir. The 13-hectare lake is a well-known local recreation and vacation area in the heart of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. You walk along the Lehbach stream to the Schillinger Mühle mill. Shortly before the Hellberghof farm, the path turns off to reach the highest point of the hike. From there, you have a wonderful panoramic view of the surrounding, wooded ridges. Down in the valley flows the Flonterbach stream. The trail follows the stream around the forest pond back to the Schillingen leisure facility, which is popular with day-trippers, hikers and mountain bikers alike.

The trail has been awarded 68 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.

    Author’s recommendation

Two well-marked shortcuts offer the option of reducing the route to 11 or 13 kilometers.

A botanical highlight in March/April are the daffodil meadows along the middle course of the Ruwer between the Schillingen leisure facility and the village of Zerf. The path to the daffodil meadows is signposted from the leisure facility. A daffodil festival is held every year at the end of March/beginning of April.

    Roadbook

The starting point is the leisure facility at Schillinger See. We enter the barefoot path through a wooden entrance portal, which is also the starting point of the dream loop. We walk along the Flonterbach stream for a few meters before turning right and reaching the Fatima Chapel. Here, the bell tower tempts hikers to interrupt the silence of the pine forest with the ringing of the bell. We continue to follow the stream to its source, then head through dense tree cover towards the village of Heddert. Shortly before Heddert, we cross the country road and pass a barbecue area. Here you can enjoy your first panoramic view of the Black Forest. The path leads us along fields and pastures to the village of Schillingen. Here the panorama opens up towards the Osburger Hochwald. After 2.5 km of panoramic trail, we cross a farm track and reach a 3.5 km loop that leads us to the Kell reservoir. Our route then leads over the dam wall of the lake in the direction of the campsite and outdoor pool. Immediately before the leisure area, we turn right and follow the signs towards Schillingen. After a flight of steps, we turn left, turn into a long leaf tunnel, cross the L 143 and walk along the Lehbach stream until just before the Schillinger Mühle mill. Before the first houses, we turn left over a small footbridge, then along a meadow path and the road "Im Käswieschen" until we finally climb to the highest point of the hike on beautiful meadows. Another panoramic view follows. The last part of the tour leads first through meadows, then through a forest down to the Flonterbach valley. We follow the course of the stream and return to the forest pond and the Schillingen leisure facility.
