Types of paths
- Mostly single-track paths
- Sometimes normal dirt road
- A few hundred meters asphalt/cobblestone at the start and the end
Energy management
- Imagine the elevation challenges of this loop as a “W” turned upside down or as a two-hump camel. Don’t use all your energy on the first climb, save some for the second one as well.
Recommended period
- Completable at any time of the day and season. In rainy periods be careful of slippery stones and mud. In icy and snowy periods, exercise extra caution on exposed sections and viewpoints.
The trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary’s most successful active trail runner.
Author’s recommendation
- We can further enhance the variety of experiences by not approaching the starting point on the eastern shore, but by going to Visegrád and connecting the run with a ferry there. We will get to enjoy a beautiful view!

Safety information

Detailed description of the run
Starting from the northern end of the car park in front of the ferry port, first cross the main road and then the railway line on Magyar Street, and begin climbing along the cobblestone small streets following the K+ mark. At the Y junction, turn left first, then shortly after right down a staircase. Despite the impressive views and the Danube Bend location, the route passes surprisingly among neglected, ruined houses. At the end of the street, turn right onto a clearing with a built rest area and a stunning view.
After a short break, we climb up a rocky, narrow path and reach a huge car park, Kövesmező. Among the numerous paths here, look for the K sign pointing in the "8-9 o'clock direction". We walk along a wide, airy dirt road on the National Blue Trail, then soon turn right onto the S marking. On a challenging ascent, we try to keep running, step by step getting closer to the 412 meter high peak of Remetekereszt-bérc. After passing the highest point, we enjoy a pleasant descent during which the line of the Danube occasionally appears between the trees. At the Lóczi Rest, turn left: following the S● marking, a narrow and winding section awaits. The encounter with the S↺ marking results in a complicated intersection; be careful to stay on the path marked S●. At the end of this special serpentine section, we reach the Ernő Spring.
From here, we descend along the creek bed towards the Danube. Leaving the view of Dőry Castle among the trees, turn left onto the S+ mark. We pass several holiday homes, then start climbing a steep village ravine demanding serious effort. Staying on the S+ marking, we ascend a rocky, uneven, well-trodden path winding narrowly among the trees. After a few minutes of heavy breathing, the landscape suddenly opens, and we find ourselves at a breathtaking viewpoint. We stand on top of a cliff towering steeply above the Danube, beneath our feet the EuroVelo6 bike path rest area, main road 12, and the Budapest–Szob railway tracks. To the front left appears Dömös, opposite in the foothills hides Pilismarót, to the right stretches Zebegény, all framed by the wonderful lines of the Visegrád Mountains.
Continuing, the situation does not change much; we climb quite steeply on a narrow, technical path. Of course, walking is not shameful; it is part of trail running. After a bit more than half a kilometre, the trees suddenly disappear above us, and a stunning view similar to Imét greets us again. This time we settle more opposite Dömös, and thanks to the higher vantage point, the Pilismarót Bay also becomes visible.
It's hard to leave, but we must continue. A distinctly rocky, stony section awaits. Soon we reach the highest point of our running loop, where we switch to the S marking. After a few minutes of easy jogging, at the first serious junction, turn left and continue on an unmarked path. After a gentle descent, we join again the K marking of the National Blue Trail and follow the wild, washout-like path of the Templom Valley towards Nagymaros. The root-rich path connects to the upper section of Diófa Street, where a blue well helps refreshment. From here, there is not much left; just jog straight into the town centre.
