Castle and lake: a wonderful mountain bike route

The route starts right at the beautifully located Castle Nanstein; the view from the castle and the ruins themselves are the ideal start to a mountain bike route full of highlights. Immediately after the castle, we take a short descent before alternating between road and wider forest paths. Then it goes onto a long, smooth trail passing directly by the Heidenfelsen. The next climb is taken on a side road before heading back onto a single trail to the Bärenlochweiher. Now we bike uphill above Kindsbach on the old Steigstraße, then slightly downhill past the rock bench. The bench is spectacularly integrated into the rock and offers not only a nice rest spot but also a great photo opportunity. Then follows a beautiful downhill trail towards Einsiedlerhof. We ride over the big and small mountain to the Perlenburg castle ruins, just a small detour off our route.

Past the Mühlberger Hut, the route heads to Gelterswoog. This idyllic bathing lake can be used for a quick refreshment with a jump into the cold water, especially in summer. Then we ride through dense forest to the small village of Bann. We cross the village and head to the big Hausberg, the highest point on our route! After the rapid descent, there is a short trail to Bärenloch.

Now we bike down a beautiful longer trail past Herrengärtchen into Landstuhl. After that, it goes back to our starting point.

    OUR PATHFINDER RULES

"Out of everyday life – into nature!" A few basic rules help ensure that the MTB route can become a sustainable experience for people and nature.

    1. Only ride on permitted paths. According to the Rhineland-Palatinate Forestry Act, cycling on footpaths and trails is not allowed, except for trails on our routes.
    2. Leave no trace. Take your trash home and protect our trails through your riding style. Avoid braking with locked tires. Do not cut switchbacks.
    3. Keep your bike under control. Stay in your comfort zone, adjust speed to the situation, and be able to stop within sight! Do not underestimate the technical and physical demands of our routes. Inform yourself in advance.
    4. Respect other path users. Announce your arrival in time, preferably with our pathfinder bell! Do not ride on certified hiking trails. Be considerate on paths shared by hikers and mountain bikers. Hikers have priority. Let other users pass.
    5. Be considerate of animals in the forest. We are moving in their habitat. Give them peace and do not disturb them while feeding. Avoid riding at dusk or night.
    6. Do not build illegal trails. Use existing, authorized tracks and courses.
    7. Be a role model. Show through your behavior how mutual consideration works and leads to good coexistence for all forest users. Help by living these rules.
    8.

These rules are based on the Trail Rules of the German Initiative Mountainbike (www.dimb.de) and the #LoveTrailsRespectRules campaign by Bike Magazine.
