The landmark of the Sickingen city Landstuhl is clearly visible - the imposing ruins of Nanstein Castle. This popular destination was built in the second half of the 12th century. The castle distinctly documents recognizable building materials from five centuries and therefore invites visitors in a unique way to an impressive walk through European castle history.
Burg Nanstein was first documented in 1253. From the 13th to the 15th century, it was a royal castle, particularly owned by a community of knights in the 14th and 15th centuries, with numerous changes of ownership. From 1518, Franz von Sickingen expanded it as the sole owner into a supposedly firearm-capable fortification. In 1523, it was besieged by Elector Ludwig V of the Palatinate, Archbishop Richard of Trier, and Landgrave Philipp I of Hesse. With the largest artillery deployment of the time, the castle was battered, and Franz von Sickingen, the rebellious knight, was severely injured. He died on May 7, 1523. From 1543, the descendants of Sickingen transformed the castle into a Renaissance palace. During the Thirty Years' War, there were alternating garrisons. In 1668, the Elector of the Palatinate conquered the castle, leading to partial demolition of the structure. French troops destroyed further parts of the castle in 1689. From 1869, the castle was partially renovated again.
The partially rebuilt battery tower from the time of Franz von Sickingen appears particularly impressive.
The castle hill rises 80 meters above the town and offers a wide view over Landstuhl to the Northern Palatinate Uplands.
The 100-meter long and 50-meter wide castle provides a romantic backdrop in summer for the Landstuhl castle games, concerts, and castle tours.
With 70 indoor seats and about 150 seats on the observation terrace, the "Burgschänke" located directly below the castle ruin invites visitors to stop by.
