The Northern and Central Black Forest from a different perspective. Across the Nature Park to the National Park. Beyond the Kinzig Valley to Hornberg.

The Nature Park extends from Ettlingen, Karlsbad, Birkenfeld, and Pforzheim in the north down through the Kinzig Valley to Ettenheim, Schuttertal, Hofstetten, Mühlenbach, Hornbach, Tennenbronn, Hardt, and Eschbronn in the south. From the edge of the Rhine Plain in the west to the Nagold Valley in the east. At Ruhestein, we touch the Black Forest National Park.

Whether the legend that the Black Forest got its name from the "Black Valleys" in the north is true is unclear. One thing is certain: if we imagine today's roads and railways in the Murg, Alb, Enz, and Nagold valleys absent, these valleys would be quiet and dark.

We start at Schlossplatz in Ettlingen to climb up to the .. mountain to get a first overview of the Rhine Plain and the old Margravial city of Karlsruhe. Through the Alb valley, we enter the Black Forest. At the end of Gaistal, we come up onto the beautiful ridges between the Enz and Murg valleys. At Hohlturm, we reach the first mountain with almost 900 meters in height. In Schönmünzach, we cross the Murg Valley to reach the Wildsee, Wildseeblick, and then climb to Seekopf in the heart of the National Park. At Ruhestein is the information center about the flora and fauna of the National Park, inviting visitors to linger.

Between the B 500 and the outliers of the Murg Valley, the route continues south to Bad Rippoldsau and Oberharmersbach. Upon reaching the Kinzig Valley, it follows the eastern side of Gutachtal to Hornberg.

    1st stage: Ettlingen - Gaistal

2nd stage: Gaistal - Murg Valley

3rd stage: Murg Valley - Schliffkopf

    4th stage: Schliffkopf - Hark

    5th stage: Hark - Hornberg.

    Author’s recommendation

Some stages of this route pass through areas with populations of capercaillie (over 700 meters above sea level). During the breeding season (sitting period from February to early June), some paths are too close to sensitive areas. Therefore, we recommend walking this route from mid-June to October.
