Wolfach Castle, affectionately called "Schlössle" by the locals, was the ancestral seat of the Barons of Wolfach, one of the oldest and wealthiest noble families in the Kinzig Valley. The castle has been documented since the middle of the 11th century and is probably several decades older.
The castle was renovated again around 1447, but in the following years it was abandoned as the residence of the ruling family in favour of the larger and certainly more comfortable city palace. The castle gradually began to fall into disrepair and later served as a source of building materials, especially after town fires and floods.
In the 1980s, under the leadership of the Wolfach Black Forest Association and with the support of the town and the State Monuments Office, the remains of the ruins were uncovered and secured. Today, the old walls are a favourite spot for many hikers and walkers who enjoy the unobstructed view of the town and the Wolftal valley.
