Der Namen leitet sich vermutlich vom lateinischen mons grinto ab, was soviel wie sumpfiger Kopf (mons, montis (lat): der Berg) bedeutet und auf das Hochmoor hinweist.
Am südlichen Ende, oberhalb des Mummelsees, steht der 23 m hohe Hornisgrindeturm. Sein Bau 1910 geht auf die Initiative des Badischen Schwarzwaldvereins zurück. Als Baumaterial wurde in der Nähe anstehender Buntsandstein verwendet. Zusammen mit dem Mummelsee war der Turm seinerzeit eines der beliebtesten Ausflugsziele der Region.
Direkt nördlich des Turms liegt das Hochmoor. Es entstand nach der Rodung des Waldes und der anschließenden Nutzung als Weidefläche ab dem 15. Jahrhundert. Weiter in Richtung Norden befindet sich der mit 1.164 m ü. NN höchste Punkt der Hornisgrinde. Danach folgt in Richtung Norden eine Windkraftanlage, die sich aufgrund der hohen Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit der Winde hier besonders anbot.
Entlang des Bergrückens führt der Westweg, sowie entlang der Westseite die Schwarzwaldhochstraße (B 500).
