BY BIKE FROM KARLSRUHE TO LÖRRACH

The Black Forest has always held a very special fascination for people. The wild romantic low mountain landscape with its deep coniferous forests and lush green meadows is rightly counted among the most popular hiking regions in Germany.

Those who want to experience this impressive hiking region by bike will find the approximately 375 km long Black Forest Cycle Route between Karlsruhe and Lörrach the ideal route.

Cycling means moving quickly and still enjoying nature with all senses.

"Pure nature experience" is the motto on the Black Forest Cycle Route, because on this varied route you cycle either away from main roads on well-ridable forest paths or on designated cycle paths on RadNETZ BW. Where no other option exists, you also use lightly trafficked streets.

Originally designed as a mountain bike variant of the Black Forest Association West Trail, the long-distance cycle route also attracts ambitious riders of touring bikes or e-bikes.

Stamina and fitness are necessary not only because of the total length; numerous Black Forest peaks must be overcome, totaling 7,200 m altitude to be managed coming from Karlsruhe.

Of course, not everyone wants to cycle hundreds of kilometers. The proposed daily stages are recommendations, and you can plan individually.

The Black Forest Association wishes you an unforgettable cycling experience.

    Author’s recommendation

    Technical equipment:

Whether with muscle power or with electric support: We recommend a tour-compatible MTB, a robust trekking bike or a gravel bike. Due to the altitude meters to be achieved, the use of bicycle trailers is not recommended, especially in the southern Black Forest.

    Signage:

On forest roads and side streets, traditional signage applies: white signs with the red lozenge of the Black Forest Association with the bicycle symbol. The signs are attached to trees or signposts.

On routes that run on public cycle paths – e.g. RadNETZ-BW – you will also find route stickers on the cycle path signs. There, the directional signage is provided by the general green cycle path direction arrows.

As of 30.04.2025, Stage 2 from Unterstmatt the route runs newly on the tourist cycle path 11 to the Mummelsee. The signage is done using route logos on the cycle path signs and with green arrows along the route.

From Ruhestein, the route has been restored to the original routing and runs parallel to the tourist cycle paths 4, 7 and 8. The signage rules are the same as before.

11.11.2024 Stage 4: From Friedenweiler, the route runs exclusively on the RadNETZ BW cycle route towards Neustadt and is guided by the route logo on the main cycle route signs. The change applies in Neustadt from Schwarzwaldstraße to Hotel Jägerhaus, where there is a connection to the previous cycle path routing. The same applies in reverse direction from Saig.

16.09.2024: Stage 2: At Ruhestein, at the National Park Center, the route guidance was changed. A few meters after crossing the street, the cycle path leads right down into the forest to soon meet the original route again.

19.07.2024: Stage 1: Between Straubenhardt and Dobel route changed (to previous routing)

17.07.2024: Stage 2: Route change between Seibelseckle and Darmstädter Hütte towards Ruhestein.

08.07.2024: Stage 6: At Malsberg-Marzell the route was relocated shortly after the town exit onto the road. The signage is done using the route logo at the cycle path sign location.

24.05.2024: Stage 2: small adjustments Baiersbronn-Obertal, Seibelseckle. Digital track of the routing locally adjusted.

22.03.2024: Stage 1: Shortly after the start in Karlsruhe, in the area of the Oberwald Animal Park up to Aue, the route was adapted to the urban cycle network. The signage is mostly done by route logos on the main cycle path signs.

13.05.2023: Route change Stage 4. New: Schönwald - Martinskapelle - Brend - Alte Eck. Old: The long descent via Katzensteig is no longer valid.

This measure eliminated a steep and difficult ascent in Schochenbach.

The Black Forest Cycle Route is signposted in both directions.

At the Moment there are Parts of the railway under construction. After this construction completed railway is best solution. During tiime of railway being under construction you may check for FlixBus Basel -> Karlsruhe. If this is not possible then you can try to use train up to the part being under construction und skip that section by driving on you bicycle.

Thanks for your response. Nobody knows a touring agency that take care of luggages (from hotel to hotel ? ) ? Our trip is for 2025 (june) don't now how much time the railway will be in construction.
