Ancient Serdica is an extensive Roman archaeological complex located in the centre of Sofia above the Serdica metro station. The excavated remains reveal parts of the ancient Roman city that once occupied the area, including streets, baths, houses, and early Christian structures dating from the 4th to 6th centuries. The site offers one of the clearest views of Sofia’s Roman origins and demonstrates the city’s importance in antiquity.
The ancient city of Serdica developed as an important Roman settlement in the heart of the Balkans and became one of the key urban centres of the Roman province of Dacia Mediterranea. Large sections of the city were uncovered during the construction of Sofia’s metro system between 2010 and 2012, revealing remarkably preserved remains directly beneath the modern capital. Visitors today can walk among fragments of Roman streets, residential buildings, drainage systems, baths, and an early Christian basilica, all integrated into the contemporary urban landscape around Serdica metro station and the Largo complex. Informational panels in English help explain the layout and historical significance of the excavations.

Archaeological discoveries across central Sofia have gradually revealed the scale of Roman Serdica. The Eastern Gate and sections of the city walls were uncovered during the construction of the Largo in the 1950s, while other remains, including the city council building, temples, and fortification towers, have appeared beneath modern government buildings and public squares. Additional surviving remains include the Western Gate near St Joseph Cathedral, sections of the amphitheatre near Budapest Street, and underground tombs beneath Saint Sofia Church. Roman Serdica was a thriving administrative, religious, and commercial centre, famously associated with Emperor Constantine the Great, who reportedly considered the city his “Rome”. Today, the surviving archaeological remains form one of the most impressive urban Roman heritage sites in southeastern Europe.
