In good weather, mostly a "sun-bathing" but in any weather truly substantial alpannonia® Hard hike with two authorization points crossing the agricultural areas of Kőszeghegyalja. Cellars and their owners invite you to taste the "fruits" of their hard work in the Pogány valley and on Csömöte Hill...
Hiking passport and further information about the alpannonia® Hard circular hikes can be found on the website naturpark.hu/alpannonia®hikers.

This alpannonia® hike differs from the other hikes starting from Kőszeg in that here we leave the city following the alpannonia® red marking, while the other hikes return to the city center this way.

We visit several settlements of Kőszeghegyalja (Cák, Kőszegdoroszló) and also the farther Lukácsháza. Along the hike, we pass numerous wine cellars, meet friendly cellar owners, respond to their invitations, taste the "fruit" of their work offered with goodwill, and listen briefly to their stories. We hike through panoramic sections hosting major culinary events and enjoy every kilometer of this easy yet substantial hike.

As mentioned above, we leave Kőszeg Main Square towards Jurisics Castle, then head towards Bechtold István Nature Conservation Visitor Center, finally saying farewell to Kőszeg on Szabóhegyi Street and walking into Pogány valley on the Írottkő Nature Park bike path.

Following the alpannonia® yellow marking, we cross from Pogány to Cák, passing several wineries involved in the Kőszeghegyalja Open Cellar Day organization. Naturally, we do not miss the Cák wine cellar row; we practically visit the whole village before leaving towards Kőszegdoroszló along the Cák Creek.

We reach Kőszegdoroszló via a newly built reservoir, passing both its churches. After studying the alpannonia® information board, we head towards Alsó Forest. Following the alpannonia® yellow marking and direction signs, we go towards Csömötei lookout, which we reach in about a 20-minute walk.

A beautiful view opens before us; during the seasonal Cellar-oven Days, hundreds or even thousands find their place here among cellar-oven dishes, fruits, and last but not least, wine...

Leaving Csömöte Hill, we walk a long way through Lukácsháza towards the Kőszeg-Lukácsháza Reservoir, designed to protect the Gyöngyös riverside settlements from floods; fortunately, it has not had to be used since its inauguration. We continue walking on the dam towards Kőszeg, a popular training spot for runners and cyclists, so be mindful of them.

After descending from the dam, two lakes catch our attention, excellent attractions for walkers and anglers regardless of flood conditions; we can also make a round around them if our legs still bear the strain.

We leave the reservoir, also known as Abért Lake, on the newly built bike path leading from Kőszegfalva to Kőszeg and soon reach the city, wandering along the long Rákóczi Ferenc Street towards the Main Square, digesting all the beauty and goodness experienced on today's hike.

At the Pogány valley and Csömöte hill cellars, greet the workers with a smile; maybe they will invite you to taste the delicious "fruits" of their hard work...

For the complete hiking experience, we recommend visiting the following websites:

    Roadbook

In the section of our current route from Kőszeg to the Csömötei lookout, it mostly follows the alpannonia® red and yellow markings, however, to reinforce ourselves, it is recommended to carry the map of this hiking trail or our GPS device with us.

    • We leave Kőszeg's Main Square passing under the Tower of Heroes towards Jurisics Square. We stay on the left side of the square, reaching Jurisics Castle's main entrance via Rajnis Street, where we turn left following the alpannonia® red marking and walk uphill on Diáksétány Street all the way to Várkör.
    • We cross the pedestrian crossing and head towards Hunyadi Street, walking all the way to the Bechtold István Nature Conservation Visitor Center. From here, the alpannonia® red marking continues left towards Park Street, and that's where we go too. At the bottom of the street on the left side is the Jewish cemetery, while the alpannonia® red marking points right towards the Szénsavas spring.
    • At the sidewalk island after the Szénsavas spring, the alpannonia® red and yellow markings split apart; we choose the yellow and continue walking left on Szabóhegyi Road up to the Szabóhegyi hairpin turn. Here we turn left onto Mohás Street, and at the first intersection, again left; a sign shows the Írottkő Nature Park bicycle path and points towards Pogány. We follow the alpannonia® yellow marking, and after about a 10-minute walk, we stand at the gate of Pogány, with a fairytale log house to the left.
    • We walk down the Pogány wine cellar row, distracted by the many sights. On the left side of the road, we cross the Doroszló Creek towards the Stefanich Winery's left-pointing arrow. Here we follow the path through the trees until reaching a large clearing where we turn right and shortly after arrive at the Stefanich Winery. Large dogs bark at us from behind the fences of large properties, but we ignore them and admire the beauty of the vineyards surrounding the hill.
    • Following the map, from Stefanich Winery, our route leads straight and uphill towards Cák. Once we have climbed here, a beautiful view opens up to Kőszeghegyalja on the left. A larger building catches our attention compared to others: the Mándli Winery, which, like Stefanich Winery, is one of the most popular stops during the Kőszeghegyalja Open Cellar Day. On the road leading to the cellar, we descend and then turn right towards Cák.
    • As we enter Cák, to our right we pass the former quarry and the alpannonia® park. We continue walking towards the town center, facing the fire station at the bus turnaround; to the right of this, signs and the alpannonia® yellow marking lead us to the Cák wine cellar row.
    • We look over the ancient cellars in the cellar row and continue forward to sip the fine spring water at the Hordómosó spring. We move a little away from the cellar row, then turn left at the first opportunity, and again left heading back towards the fire station, passing the Cultural House on the left. From the fire station, we turn right, then follow the road's line and turn left straight down to the main road at Csikó Csárda.
    • We cross to the other side of the main road and continue the hike on an agricultural dirt road along the Cák Creek towards Kőszegdoroszló, where near one of the authorization points/insect hotels is located. After about a 15-minute walk, we reach the newly built Kőszegdoroszló reservoir, first going up the dam, then descending on the other side, and soon we are in Kőszegdoroszló.
    • On the right side, first, we see the Evangelical church, then continuing left we pass the Saint Martin Catholic church. Continuing on, we reach the Community House where we can learn from the alpannonia® information board. After a short rest, we continue, crossing the road and the creek to the forest, following the alpannonia® yellow markings. At the first intersection, we turn right; the road also curves right, then left uphill in the forest where a sign indicates Csömötei lookout, our next destination.
    • Leaving Kőszegdoroszló in the Lower Forest, we head towards Csömötei lookout, following the alpannonia® yellow markings to a wildlife feeding station, near where the 2nd authorization point/insect hotel is located. We continue following the markings; additional signs guide us, and after about a 15-minute walk, we are on Csömöte Hill. The path paved with concrete slabs quickly leads to the lookout. This is typically the center for various cellar-oven culinary events, but the view is truly spectacular as well. Below is a new building complex, the Lukácsháza alpannonia® point and information house, which will serve excellently for community and hiking events in the future.
    • After leaving the lookout, we descend the slope, then turning left after reaching the bottom, avoiding risk, walking parallel to the main road but one level above as long as possible. At the first opportunity, we turn right and then walk through the fields into Lukácsháza. We cross the Gyöngyös Creek bridge, then turn left on Tanács Street and continue on it up to the main road. Here we turn left again and then straight to Kossuth Lajos Street, proceeding to its end; after the playground, we turn directly from the street onto a path and soon reach the sluice of the Kőszeg-Lukácsháza reservoir.
    • We climb the stairs to the dam, then continue right towards Kőszegfalva. After about a 15-minute walk, we reach the end of the dam, spotting the Abért lakes and the parking lot. We carefully cross the main road No. 87 from the parking lot and continue on the bike path along the railway line towards Kőszeg. Another intersection and railway crossing await, but we continue on the bike path now following the red hiking marking.
    • On the bike path, we enter Kőszeg, with factories on the left, and on the right the Evangelical Agricultural High School's training farm and stables, along with some residential buildings. We cross the No. 87 main road to the OMV gas station side, then cross the Gyöngyös Creek bridge; immediately after the creek, we turn right and walk to Kőszeg's only roundabout, from where we head towards the heart of the city following the red hiking marking on Rákóczi Ferenc Street, then heading towerward to the Main Square watching the bell tower of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
