From Kőszeg to the Ólmod Deer Well
After World War II, when Europe was divided into eastern and western parts, a technical border fence, the Iron Curtain, was built between the two areas. During its existence, parts of the Kőszeg Mountains and border areas could only be visited with special permission. The Deer Well in the Lower Forest was only accessible after the removal of the technical barrier.
The hike is easy because the terrain is comfortably passable, with no major elevation changes. We pass through charming forests to reach the developed spring at the Deer Well.
The route offers numerous sights worth stopping for. In the town, you can admire the Reformed Church and the huge, about two hundred-year-old sycamore tree. Upon reaching the Lower Forest, on the right side of the path lies the Peat Moss Bog – a nature conservation area preserving a unique, rare ecosystem, strictly protected. At the border of Ólmod, the Belovich Chapel building adorns the landscape. Thanks to the forestry, the area around the Deer Well has beautifully renewed; shelters, fire pits, and benches provide comfortable resting spots.
The yellow "a" letter-marked side sections of the alpannonia® international hiking route offer a solid foundation and confidence to then tackle the main route, the red "a" letter-marked nearly 140 km "big" alpannonia®. We recommend this as the 2nd warm-up section of the trail.
Author’s recommendation
- The water from the spring is not drinkable according to tests; bring an adequate amount of liquid with you on the trip!
- The area is rich in mushrooms in autumn, with many species present. If you collect any, be sure to have them checked by an expert before consumption!

Detailed route description:
From the center of Kőszeg, you can rely for a good while on the National Blue Trail K signs. Leaving the market on your left, behind a building, you can glimpse the huge sycamore tree, which is worth admiring in its full size. After the Reformed Church, turning right, you will soon reach the bank of the Gyöngyös stream, then cross the bridge over it.
Exiting the town, carefully cross the main road 87, continue on a dirt road heading north, then enter the forest. Near the Hungarian-Austrian border, the Z sign joins from the left.
Shortly after, you arrive at a larger junction where five signs fork. Here, you leave the National Blue Trail, turning left following the S and Z signs. After leaving the forest behind, reaching the outer houses of Ólmod, you encounter buildings of the former border guard. Beyond them, at the roadside Maria statue, turn right onto the path! At the junctions, always choose the left option! Upon leaving the forest, on the right side, the Belovich Chapel building gleams white. After passing it, a concrete section follows a dirt road. Turn right here, then right again towards the forest. At the fenced area, a small sign by the forest shows the direction to the Deer Well on the left. Cross the creek on your path, then follow the signs to the right!
At the Deer Well, it is worth taking a longer break. From here, the K● and Maria Trail ᵯ signs lead uphill, then shortly join the K sign route. Those familiar with the area may want to visit the charming pine forest before returning to the town.
