The second longest distance of the Winter Tihany endurance hikes leads through the most scenic parts of the peninsula. We traverse the geyser field, then the “mountain area” stretching along the western edge of the peninsula, offering a stunning panorama over the water surface of Lake Balaton. Although the hills are not very high, appearances are deceptive: the terrain works the thighs harder than expected.
On Apáti Hill, we visit the Watchtower lookout, from where we can see the entire area, then admire the same landscape from a slightly different perspective from the Szélmarta Rocks. Entering the village, from the top of the calvary we can already see the Benedictine abbey from an unusual angle, and before reaching the finish, we can also visit the abbey itself.

Author’s recommendation
- There is no natural water source on the route, so be prepared with water, even in winter.
- At the Aranyház geyser mound, with a 300-meter round-trip detour on the S+ trail, we reach the Hármashegyi spring, from where we get an even fuller panorama and don’t have to queue at the top of the rock.
- Upon reaching the base of the Calvary, with minimal detour, we can try the famous Tihany echo – it works better in winter!
- After the hike, it’s worth going back to the nearby abbey and strolling along the Pisky promenade.
