The viewpoint of Hármashegy, geyserite cone

The view from this rock formation clearly reveals the landform of Tihany peninsula: you can see a bowl-shaped depression with a high rim and two small ponds. In clear weather, just beyond Balaton Uplands you may spot Kőris-hegy, the highest peak of Bakony Mountains, with its signature radar station. The viewpoint offers a picturesque view over Tihany and its abbey sitting on the rim. Belső-tó (Inner Lake) strikingly contrasts against the bright green colour of Balaton in the background.

Geysers are accompanying phenomena of volcanism. Past volcanic activity a vast field of geysers were born on Tihany peninsula as magma stuck in the deep interacted with precipitation that oozed through the cracks in the underlying rock and accumulated. Hot steam erupted in the form of large geysers and on the way to the surface dissolved carbonates and silica from the rock. When reaching the surface the solution cooled off and minerals were deposited forming the large white rock formations on the hillside called geyserite.

You may find several of these white rocks on the southwestern and central part of the peninsula. It fundamentally affects local landscape that geyserite is quite resistant to weathering and protects surface level like a cap.
