Boldog Özséb lookout tower (Pilis-tető)
The covered deck boasts a 360 degree view. The tower was named after Blessed Eusebius (of Esztergom), the founder of the Pauline Order, who lived as a hermit nearby. The former concrete geodesic tower was covered with wood, which not only upgraded its design but allows for safe visits. Today it also hosts meteorological sensors including a live streaming webcam.
The tower is accessible the easiest from the parking lot at Két-Bükkfa-nyereg (on foot or by bike) along a pathway paved almost all the way. Those who would prefer to avoid the paved road (and walk longer) may as well start from Pilisszentkereszt or Pilisszántó along the Red (P), Green (Z) and Green ▲(Z▲) trails.
The observation deck offers a view over Visegrád Mountains, Budai Hills, the basin of Pilisvörösvár, and even Gerecse in clear weather. As Pilis-tető is the highest peak (756 m) of the Transdanubian Mountains, the surrounding hills lie much lower. Only Börzsöny far in the north reaches higher.
In winter, while the foot of the hill is covered in fog, the tower may still be bathed in bright sunshine, making the view even more extraordinary with peaks peeping out from beneath the blanket of clouds. It is worth visiting the peak after dark too since it is easy to follow the paved road from Kétbükkfa-nyereg and for your effort, you will be rewarded with the view over Budapest by night.
Being a perfect spot to control airspace over the capital, the flat peak used to host a missile base and the remains of the buildings are still there. Construction finished in the early 1980s (two more bases followed nearby). The secret base was serviced by around 40 soldiers until it was shut down in 1996.
