Nagy-Gete rises like a round pyramid over the lower hills of Gerecse. The steep slopes hosted the first ski competition in the country in 1908 and the top used to hide a WW2 bunker. Today it is renowned for the stunning view over the area and the Blue Trail makes it even more popular. The cross on the top was erected in 2000 by a parish in Budapest in respect for the Assumption of Mary.
The calcareous grassland on the western slope features rock outcrops of limestone.
From Nagy-Gete you can observe the structure of a fault-block mountain. As a result of tensional tectonic forces crust broke into blocks. Some blocks rise or remain stationary forming a horst and some blocks subside forming a basin (graben). This is why the mountain range is a series of island-like hills not forming continuous ridgeline. It is easy to identify Hegyes-kő rising over Tokod just next to, or Kő-hegy and Öreg-kő near Bajót. You can see Nagy-Gerecse (633 m) with its tower and slopes of Halyagos and Somlyóvár south of it. Far back it is Vértes rising.
The relative height of Nagy-Gete makes it provide a bird’s-eye view over its surroundings. The Blue trail passes the peak and continues towards Dorog on a slight ascent over the eastern ridge while the hike on the western slope follows a steep path.

- Get off/on at bus stop “Dorog, városháza”.
- Get off/on at bus stop “Tokod, Hősök tere”.
- Get off/on at bus stop “Csolnok, Szent Borbála utca”.
By road
- From Dorog train station follow the Blue (K) markers (Total distance: 6.4 km, elevation gain: 327 m).
- From bus stop “Dorog, városháza” walk back towards the roundabout. Follow the Blue (K) Trail, which joins in from the left (Total distance: 6.1 km, elevation gain: 325 m).
- From bus stop “Tokod, Hősök tere” follow the Blue (K) Trail towards Nagy-Gete to the east. Past a steep ascent you will reach the peak (Total distance: 2.8 km, elevation gain: 327 m).
- From bus stop “Csolnok, Szent Borbála utca” (in front of the Museum of Minig) follow the Blue ◼ (K◼) markers until you reach the Blue (K) Trail where turn left and proceed to Nagy-Gete (Total distance: 2.4 km, elevation gain: 177 m).
