From the Barbarossa city Kaiserslautern to the Veldenz city Lauterecken, the cycle path winds on 34 km through the idyllic Lauter Valley.

Starting at the main train station in Kaiserslautern through the city center to the Garden Show, the cycle path follows the course of the Lauter to Otterbach. There it is possible to visit the Stellwerk Museum or the Motorcycle Museum. A detour to the Walloon town Otterberg with its impressive half-timbered houses and the Abbey Church from the 12th century is highly recommended.

The signposted cycle path leads via Katzweiler, Hirschhorn and Olsbrücken further into the Palatine uplands. Always near the Lauter, the cyclist reaches the small town of Wolfstein. Worth seeing: the visitor limestone mine or the castle ruins Alt- and Neuwolfstein. Via an idyllic path directly by the Lauter, it goes to Heinzenhausen and to the destination Lauterecken. There, Veldenz Castle is worth a visit. A special experience is a draisine tour.

    Author’s recommendation

On the first Sunday in August each year, part of the Lauter valley is declared a traffic-free zone. On this day, only cyclists and skaters are allowed on the road. The B270 from Kaiserslautern to Lauterecken is closed to motorised traffic and is transformed into a lively leisure trail for the whole family.

The route in the cycle network: The Lauter Valley cycle path has an important north-south connecting function linking Kaiserslautern and the Palatinate Forest with the Glan and thus with the Hunsrück-Nahe region.

    Character:

A great, family-friendly cycle path: in the varied landscape there are many places to stop with restaurants and rest areas. The numerous train stations along the route also allow cyclists to change to the train at any time and travel back by train.

The start of the route is the main train station in Kaiserslautern.

From the West Station in Kaiserslautern the Lauter Valley cycle path is signposted with the route logo. From here, the route runs parallel to the B 270 northwards. Before the street "Lothringer Dell," it goes diagonally left onto a combined pedestrian and cycle path. After the green area, turn left into "Erzhütter Straße" and immediately right into "Rütschhofstraße." After about 1.5 km, turn right over a wooden bridge and along the Lauter to the tennis courts of Otterbach. Before the tennis courts, turn left; the path passes the Lampertshof before turning right onto "Siegelbacher Straße." Directly at the Stellwerk Museum, turn left onto the cycle path. Follow the route to Katzweiler. Shortly after entering the town, go right over the tracks and then immediately left into "Eisenbahnstraße." After the train station, turn left into "Alte Brücke" street. After the Bonanza Ranch, continue right to the district road K 23. Then turn left over the bridge and immediately right onto a farm road. After the two sports fields, turn left towards the Freilichtbühne Katzweiler. At the junction to the open-air theatre, turn right and follow the path to the country road L 356. From here, continue a short distance on a roadside cycle path up to the Hirschorner Bordenmühle. Continue right through the property and then immediately right again onto a farm road. Follow this to the entrance of Sulzbachtal. After entering the town, turn immediately right and then at the bending priority road turn right again and continue straight to the B 270. Via the roadside cycle path, continue left to Olsbrücken. Shortly after entering the town, cross the street to the left and follow the cycle path past the playground and sports field. At the street "Am Hahngraben," turn left over a small wooden bridge and then left again onto "Bahnhofstraße." Follow the street past the train station to the district road K 27. Then turn right to the B 270 and then left over the roadside cycle path towards Kreimbach-Kaulbach. Follow the roadside cycle path into the town of Kreimbach-Kaulbach. Immediately after crossing the railway tracks, turn right onto a pedestrian and cycle path that leads past the playground to the train stop. There, turn right onto Lauterstraße and cross the railway tracks again. Turn left onto the main street and follow it until the street makes a sharp left turn. There, continue straight onto a farm road and follow it to Rutsweiler an der Lauter. The cycle path follows the K 48 to Roßbach. Further on, the K 38 is crossed by turning left, crossing the railway and immediately turning right again onto the field path. Soon comes the junction to the right to the youth hostel, campsite and swimming pool; the Lauter Valley cycle path continues straight ahead. Always following the railway and the Lauter, the train station Wolfstein lies on the right. Turn here and pass Wolfstein station to the bridge. Then get back on the cycle path, which runs past the KOB industrial site over a small elevation to Oberweiler-Tiefenbach. Turn right onto K 49 and follow the street to the left to Oberweiler-Tiefenbach. Straight ahead, a field path leads along the Lauter to Heinzenhausen. At the town entrance, turn left onto the K 41, which is used within the town as well. At the town exit, turn right onto the roadside cycle path to Lohnweiler. The federal road is crossed using an underpass and continues on the main street into the town. At the bus stop, turn right into "Mühlacker" street. At its end, a farm track continues to Lauterecken. Follow the street "Am Lauterbühl" to the railway tracks, cross these and follow "Schillerstraße." At the Lauter bridge, turn onto a path directly along the Lauter and follow it past the allotment gardens to the main street in the town center. Turn left onto the main street and follow it. Before the tracks, turn right into Bahnhofstraße. The Lauter Valley cycle path ends at Lauterecken-Grumbach station.
