Ruine Altwolfstein, Wolfstein
Emperor Barbarossa founded Altwolfstein Castle on a rocky ridge of the Königsberg around 1170. In 1363 it was owned by Ganerben Sponheim vassals. In 1504 the castle was destroyed during a feud. Since that time it has been a ruin. Preserved are the 22m high five-sided keep and a part of the enclosing wall.

From the platform of the 20 m high, five-sided keep, one has a very good view of the surrounding area. The masonry of the small enclosure is a well-preserved example of High Tower construction. Another feature of this type of construction is the protruding top of the attack side of the keep. To the north of the castle ruins, on a steep slope, there are wall debris indicating the earlier, lower-lying outer castle. From 1961 to 1975, remains of a castle house, a gate tower and a shaft well were uncovered. Unfortunately, the keep is not accessible at present.
The following story is still told from more recent times:
On the inner wall of the keep ruins, at some height, one can see the handle and the part of a mason's trowel. This tool is said to have been walled in by a fellow worker in memory of a craftsman who fell and died during restoration work. This trowel, which belonged to the victim, is said to be at the exact height from which the man fell. (Source Wikipedia)
