Veldenz Castle and Veldenz Tower
Veldenz Castle is located in the small Palatine town of Lauterecken and is considered a cultural monument.
The Veldenzschloss Lauterecken stands on the site of a moated castle of the Counts of Veldenz, first mentioned in 1343.
All that remains of the medieval building are the surrounding walls of the basement. After the Palatinate-Twinbrück period, the castle was extended as a Renaissance castle in the 1520/30s under Count Palatine Ruprecht, the founder of the new Palatinate-Veldenz line.
Lauterecken became the residence of the Princes of Palatinate-Veldenz (1543-1694).
In 1752, the palace was largely rebuilt as the Electoral Palatinate's chief administrative centre.
In 1803, it was passed on to the rentmaster Falciola, who repaired the building and received General Field Marshal von Blücher here.
It was not until 1980 that the complex gradually passed into municipal ownership, was extensively renovated and reopened in August 2018.
The Veldenz Tower, the cellar with its late Gothic ribbed vault and the newly furnished "Count's Hall" with stucco ceilings and portraits of the Counts of Pfalz-Veldenz are all gems. The Renaissance façade of the "New Building" is located in Schlossgasse. The restored castle houses a doctor's surgery, a music school and a registry office in addition to the municipal event and exhibition rooms.
Guided tours of the castle and town are available on request.
