Ruine Neuwolfstein, Wolfstein
Rudolf of Habsburg began the construction of Neuwolfstein Castle in 1275.
Rudolf von Habsburg began building the Neuwolfstein castle in 1275, only a few hundred meters away from the existing Altwolfstein castle.
The reason for the construction was, according to legend, a whim of the lady of the castle, who was not satisfied with the location of the existing castle and wanted a castle closer to the small town of Wolfstein. Even today, the ruins of the castle dominate the view of the town and from the top, the view over Wolfstein and the Lauter Valley is more than worth the climb.
The castle complex was partly destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In the Palatine War of 1688 the castle was made uninhabitable by the enemy. Since that time the ruins fell into disrepair. Within the still preserved ring wall there is a memorial place for the fallen. From the former castle complex there are still remains of the neck ditch, the 1.2 meter thick ring wall, the shield wall and the castle gate, as well as remains of the foundation walls of the palace.
Today, the ruins serve as a war memorial. It has belonged to the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1963.
