From Freising, the oldest town on the Isar, the sporty bike route runs along the WasserRadlWege Oberbayern through the Amper Valley at Zolling into the hilly Hallertau. Along the way, you pass typical Hallertau communities such as Attenkirchen, Au i. d. Hallertau, or Rudelzhausen, each with its special sights – from the nostalgic marketplace in Attenkirchen to the castle and brewery in Au, and the pretty Schimmel chapel near Enzelhausen.
From Rudelzhausen, the northernmost point of the route, the Abens bike path leads over Nandlstadt with its neo-Gothic town hall and forest swimming pool, through other villages back into the Amper Valley, accompanied by fantastic landscape views. Near Inkofen, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Amper Valley before returning to the cathedral city of Freising, which with its cathedral, Weihenstephan, and historic old town forms the crowning conclusion of the route.

    Author’s recommendation

For a cool refreshment, there is the forest swimming pool in Nandlstadt or one of the cozy beer gardens along the route.

    Roadbook

Along the "WasserRadlWege Oberbayern", the route first leads from Freising's old town into the Neustift district and then further north along the edge of the forest to the Wieskirche, a well-known pilgrimage church. From there, we follow the signs for the "WasserRadlWege Oberbayern" over Tuntenhausen down into the Amper Valley and through Zolling before entering the hilly Hallertau. We pass Attenkirchen and reach the market town of Au i. d. Hallertau via small villages.

On the way, a detour to the "Hopfenhimmel" at Reichertshausen is recommended, a six-meter-high viewing platform with a beautiful view over the hop gardens. The beer garden at the Au castle brewery is also ideal for a break. Along the "Bockerlradweg", a disused railway track of the former Hallertau local railway, we reach Rudelzhausen, the northernmost community in the Freising region. A visit to the Neumeier hazelnut farm is worthwhile here. Half of the distance is now reached.

We now follow the "Abens bike path" through Tegernbach to Nandlstadt, passing the neo-Gothic town hall and the refreshing forest swimming pool. There are also various places to stop in Nandlstadt. The route continues sporty on the "Abens bike path" via smaller villages like Baumgarten, Sixthaselbach and Bergen to Inkofen. Partly steep climbs are rewarded with magnificent landscape views. In Inkofen, the filial church of St. Michael offers a wonderful view of the Amper Valley. We cross the Amper over the Inkofen bridge and ride a short section on the "Ammer-Amper bike path" directly along the broad loops of the Amper with its floodplain forests and nearly primeval, original vegetation. Here it is definitely worth getting off your bike and enjoying the river landscape. Shortly after, we reach the Amper community of Langenbach.

The route continues from Langenbach on the "Abens bike path" to Hangenham, Rudlfing and Marzling, where the "Abens bike path" ends. It continues on the "Isar bike path" west into the urban area of Freising. Several bridges must be crossed. At the Korbinian bridge, we turn right towards the city center. The cathedral city of Freising itself offers numerous winding alleys, pretty townhouses and various places to stop for a break in its historic old town to conclude the route. A visit to the Mariendom on the cathedral hill is also worthwhile.
