Triglav National Park Verified partner
The Triglav National Park is the only Slovenian national park. The park was named after Triglav, the highest mountain in the heart of the park, which is also the highest summit in Slovenia (2864 m).
The Triglav National Park extends along the Italian border and near to the Austrian border in the northwest of Slovenia, that is, in the south-eastern section of the Alps. Its territory is nearly identical to that occupied by the Eastern Julian Alps. The park covers 840 square kilometers or 4% of the territory of Slovenia. The Triglav National Park is one of the oldest European parks; the first protection dates back to 1924 when the Alpine Conservation Park was founded.
Triglav National Park
Triglav National Park is the only national park in Slovenia. It is named after Triglav, which rises to its highest point (2864 m) in the heart of the park and is also Slovenia's highest peak.
It is situated in north-western Slovenia, close to the border with Italy and the Austrian border, in the south-eastern part of the Alpine massif. It overlaps almost completely with the Eastern Julian Alps. It covers 840 km2, which is 4% of Slovenia's surface area.
It is one of Europe's oldest parks, with the first protection dating back to 1924, when the Alpine Conservation Park was established.
As a unique protected area in the Alpine world, the Triglav National Park gives priority to the conservation of ecosystems and natural processes, natural values, the diversity of habitat types, fauna and flora, and the quality and diversity of landscapes. In the inhabited parts of the National Park, the emphasis is on preserving the cultural heritage and the quality of the cultural landscape, which is the result of many years of coexistence between local people and nature. Conservation of nature and cultural heritage, sustainable development and communication with the general public are the challenges and tasks of the Triglav National Park Public Service, which, through active participation, brings the importance of nature and cultural heritage conservation and sustainable development in the Alps to the attention of local people and visitors.
