The Julian Alps are a mountain range with an area of 4,400 km² that stretches across Slovenia and Italy. More than three quarters of the mountain range is located in Slovenia, including more than 150 peaks over two thousand meters. The beauty of the Alpine highlands stretches across the valleys of the Soča, Sava Dolinka and Sava Bohinjka rivers and includes the lakes of Bohinj and Bled, forested hills and lowland pastures, breathtaking mountain passes, the famous Bohinj Nostalgia Railway and other unique features of the region. These places of outstanding natural beauty and remarkable cultural heritage form the first UNESCO biosphere area in Slovenia.
