A nicely laid-out path will gradually lead us from the forest above the village of Strmec to the high-mountain world of Mangart Saddle, where our breath will be taken away by views of Mount Mangart (2679 m), the longest rock face in the Julian Alps Loška stena, the emerald Jalovec, and the Belopeška lakes deep below on Italian territory. Of course, there are many more gems whose beauty will astonish you along this relatively long route and make all the hiking effort worthwhile.
Author’s recommendation
We recommend visiting the hut at Mangart Saddle (desserts and stews are excellent ;-)), as well as visiting the mountain dairy at Mangart alpine pasture (purchase of sheep cheese).
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

Safety information
The path is suitable for hikers and mountaineers who are well-prepared in terms of fitness. On some smaller sections, it can be slippery in unstable weather, so caution is advised.
The path partially runs along an easy mountain trail. Use of mountain trails is at your own risk.
Tips and suggestions
Due to the length of the path, we recommend starting the hike in the early morning hours. Check the weather forecast before starting the hike at http://meteo.arso.gov.si/met/sl/weather/bulletin/mountain/. At Mangart Saddle and on Mount Mangart, there is usually no connection to the Slovenian mobile network, but the Italian network works.
Roadbook
We start the approximately 20-kilometer hike at the parking lot behind the village of Strmec, under the telecommunications antenna. The path gradually leads us through the forest to the first technical attraction – the dam for the Log pod Mangartom hydroelectric power plant. From there, we turn right into the forest and slowly ascend in the shade of the beech forest beneath the Strmec alpine meadows to an abandoned forest road, which we cross, and after a short walk on a partly flat terrain, we reach Gorenji stan. Here the path joins a mountain trail which is followed almost all the way to the asphalt road entrance, a few hundred meters before the last Mangart tunnel. We leave the road here and take the old military road above it towards the ruins of an old military fortification and past it to Mangart Saddle, which is the highest point of our ascent. After resting and enjoying the accumulated pleasures for body and soul with a view of the surroundings, the path starts descending towards the hut at Mangart Saddle. A stop to taste the excellent apple strudel is self-evident. The path then descends through the last tunnel of the Mangart road and shortly after turns again onto the path we had ascended. Through the Mesnovka area, we reach Gorenji stan again, from where we descend on the mountain path to Mangart alpine pasture (tasting and purchase of sheep cheese and curd are of course essential here). Just beyond the pasture, we enter the area of the Stože landslide, which devastated the village of Log pod Mangartom in 2000. The slide is now repaired and safe, so walking on it poses no problems. From here we can already see the new mighty viaduct over the Mangart stream. Our path turns left about half a kilometer before it to the intake of the pipeline for the accumulation reservoir above Strmec. From there, we continue lightly on the flat cement pipe to the intake where we rejoin the path we walked on during the ascent and after a few turns reach the parking lot in Strmec.
