Sometimes there is no time or mood to travel farther, but we want to have a good bike ride. Thanks to Budapest's fortunate location, we can easily do this even off-road well within the administrative boundaries.

There are few capital cities with millions of residents where you can reach a real forest by bike, or even on foot, from the downtown area within visible time. From this perspective, Budapest has exceptional features, as we are not talking about a few hectares of planted park forest, but about genuine, game-rich mountains and forests.

Taking advantage of this, it is worth occasionally escaping the rush of everyday life for a few hours and ventilate your mind in addition to a thorough exercise. Leaving the initial asphalt quickly behind us, we can cycle comfortably and safely on forest roads where neither the steepness nor the technical challenge should be a bottleneck for those who have ever cycled off-road.

    Author’s recommendation

    • If we happen to be in very good shape and don't want to take the train, then continue cycling on the blue trail towards Pilisborosjenő. Later we will reach the foot of Kis-Kevély, where turning right onto the red cycling sign we can head towards Budakalász. Upon reaching the settlement, we can return to the starting point with the help of the HÉV.

    Safety information

    • In the first kilometers, in the urban section, the bike path crosses busy places in many spots. Always be very cautious here!
    • Around Városmajor and along tram line 61, we also cross railway tracks on two wheels. This is a very tricky situation and often results in falls. Always try to cross the tracks as perpendicular as possible.

    Tips and suggestions

    Roadbook

    Itinerary:

    • Csalogány Street - Széll Kálmán Square, then from here throughout our route we follow the blue cycling pictogram to the final destination

    Route in detail:

After admiring the wonderful city view at Batthyány Square, get on the saddle and start heading towards Margaret Bridge. The easiest is to turn left immediately at Csalogány Street, from here a straight road leads to Széna Square, and a protected cycling lane is available. (If we want to ride on a bike path, then cycle three streets further up Kacsa Street.)

Be cautious on the cycling path of Retek Street, it is always busy here. On Szilágyi Erzsébet Avenue, we can move more calmly; just be careful crossing the tracks. Pay attention to the blue cycling sign, as it leaves Hűvösvölgyi Road after a while; turn right into a quiet small street. We run parallel to the Ördög-ditch, then cross it again with another right turn. In the next street, we finally reach the edge of the forest and say goodbye to the city.

From downtown to the Buda hills in a flash

Starting along the ditch we make a wide curve around Nyéki Hill. On the southern side of the hill, we can ride comfortably on compacted white gravel, then for a few blocks we briefly cycle on the last street by the edge of the forest. Turning right back into the woods, gather momentum, as a strenuous climb awaits. Arriving at the former airport side, the climb evens out, and on the left, we can rest at a resting place and have a little refreshment.

Going around the other side of Nyék and under the shadow of Homok Hill, we reach Határ Saddle, the most significant junction in the area. Therefore, it is not easy at first to find the right path among the many roads branching star-like. Look for the blue cyclist sign, which above the airport and under the gas pipeline will lead us along a rather scenic path. Next to the Hangar building, we join the popular route traditionally called the Panorama Circle. Following the S sign, we reach Virágos Saddle on clayey, sometimes slightly washed-out paths.

    Forest-edge streets, houses

From here, we continue cycling along the quiet, gravel cart roads of Gercse holiday area. For a short time, we say goodbye to the longitudinal ridge of Csúcs Hill – Kálvária Hill, and cycle further on dirt roads in bushy, meadow landscapes. In the shadow of electric overhead lines, we go around Kálvária Hill, decorated with three crosses at its peak, then reach a smaller junction. Here, still staying on the blue sign, we turn right and descend firmly towards Solymár. At the end of the steepest descent of the route, we reach the asphalt and the brickyard.

At the brickyard, turning right, we ride parallel to the tracks towards Budapest, and after about 1 kilometer, we can spot the Üröm railway station, from where we can easily return to Budapest.

    Public transport

    Public-transport-friendly

Our starting point, Batthyány Square, can be directly approached from the north by the H5 HÉV. We can also get relatively close to this point by train since both the Déli railway station and Nyugati are quite near.

    Parking

Traveling to the start point by car is not very advisable, as parking spaces are quite limited and paid. It is better to park the vehicle somewhere further out and approach the square by bike or for example by HÉV.
